How to implement Value Based Education?

  Kids studying with focus

We all know about Value Based Education and its necessity to develop life skills in the students. A lot of online discussions have been carried out across the world through national & international webinars. But question which remains unanswered is how to implement it in our schools ? What  curriculum should we adhere to ? Can we teach values by books ? If not, then what should be our course of action.

No doubt, teaching life skills is the most challenging task as compared to gaining knowledge & skills because the later can be accessed  and learnt from various sources. What about values & life skills ? Just reading will not do or attempting a question paper on values or life skills will not solve the purpose. Then what ?

This is the first time that a time- tested Model on the implementation of Value Based Education is being shared.

First & fore- most requirement is of Mentor who has already experienced these life skills in his life. Secondly, teachers & parents to be role-models. The kids are copy-cats or imitators.  Through observational learning, they will behave same way as parents behave. Thirdly, the school must have a creative curriculum.

Every day in the morning after prayers have a circle-time for 20 to 30 min.  This circle - time should be productive as kids will learn life skills.

Divide the life skills into 6 parts as follows. Take each life skill every day.

1. On Mondays take Good Manners

2. On Tuesdays take Good Habits

3. On Wednesdays take theme - based role plays like sharing & caring, tree plantation,  water conservation , cleanliness drive , waste segregation etc.

4. On Thursdays take Moral stories telling.

5. On Fridays take Quiz on General Knowledge or Experiential Learning Activities.

6. On Saturdays conduct Yoga Exercises.

The purpose will only be achieved if every student is involved turn by turn individually or in a group. It should be fun based learning.

This way the future generation will be educated and ethically, socially & morally strong  human beings as well.
